A few weeks ago I attended the Ganja Goddess Getaway in Coachella Valley, California (yup – the same place as ‘Coachella’). If you haven’t heard of this type of event, it’s a female only, marijuana fueled weekend. It gives women with a safe place to enjoy all forms of marijuana and to learn from each other. The event also hosts a stellar educational conference on everything Mary Jane. For those that didn’t make it out to this weekend, here are some of the high points (pun intended) from the conference:
Marijuana as Medicine – The Basics
The marijuana plant produces two main substances called cannabinoids. These substances are commonly known as THC and CBD. While most people have heard of THC (it’s the part that gets you high), fewer are aware of CBD (no high, but crazy good for you according to everyone at GGG). A number of the women I met were medicating to treat all sorts of ailments like anxiety, depression, inflammation, and menopause. Stories of improved health and mental wellness were coming from virtually everyone at the event.
Movement + Medication
It’s important to realize that marijuana should be treated and taken like a medicine. Each puff, piece of candy, or dab contains an amount of marijuana that can be measured (or estimated) in milligrams. I totally get that some folks want to hit it hard and be “so f’d up”, but using (abusing perhaps) at those levels prevents you from functioning. Perhaps a more mature way to use marijuana is to learn your dosage.
At GGG we learned that once you find the dosage that’s right for you, you can actually incorporate ‘medicating’ with fitness. Do you hate working out? Well, have you ever tried medicated (read: HIGH) hooping?
As long as you are aware of your dosage and don’t overdo it medicating with marijuana combined with movement such as hula hooping, yoga, and dance can help take your physical activity to an entirely different level (it’s cosmic af!).
No hangover, No stress, No Problem
Truth be told, the majority of people using marijuana do so for a recreational purpose. Being female is stressful, and we all need a way to relax (it’s all the reason you need – puff, puff, pass). For me, smoking allows me to de-stress and have fun. I love using it at concerts too! The best part is that the next day I’m not hungover.
Scoring your stash (how to buy marijuana in 2018)
Even though marijuana is legal in a lot of states, it can be a bit nerve wracking for women to but it. Let’s talk about the do’s and do nots of buying weed, wax and edibles.
For a variety of reasons, finding a dispensary isn’t always easy. In California marijuana is legal for recreational and medical use. However, the individual cities vary in how the issue permits for dispensaries to operate. Some cities readily welcome the business (ie: Desert Hot Springs) and others make it very difficult.
In the difficult to operate cities dispensaries still pop-up. The challenge for them is that the city will issue daily fines and rack up the pressure until they move out. Nonetheless, buying weed at these dispensaries can seem sketchy, but it’s usually easy. Here’s some of my personal tips:
- Use Weedmaps (it’s an app in the app store) to find your local dispensary. Check the reviews and see if they have any ‘new customer/patient offers’.
- Read the reviews. Your fellow pot-peeps are usually pretty good about telling the community the good and bad points of each shop.
- Visit during the daytime. The shops usually have armed security inside and out. However, it just feels better to me to have some daylight shining down on me. If nothing else, I can see any sketchy people lurking around.
- Take a friend.
- Have an idea of what you want before you go. Learn the differences between indica, sativa, and blends.
- Don’t medicate it until you get home 😉
